News

April 2009

The Chalk Gallery
First, sad news. I’m afraid that I will no longer be at The Chalk Gallery due purely to conflicting dates during the next year. It was wonderful to be involved with the gallery and I hope to exhibit there again in the future. Many thanks to them for their support and do still pop in if you’re in the area as they always have something interesting going on.

Arundel Gallery Trail
I’m pleased to announce that I have been invited to take part in the Arundel Gallery Trail during the Arundel Festival at the end of August. I don’t have any details to give you at the moment but I will be spending the summer scouring Arundel for suitable painting subjects and sustaining myself with plenty of walks by the river and cream teas…someone’s got to do it.

Selectors Choice
I sure that I have bored most of you with the tale of how I started painting. In case I haven’t, the abridged version is that I used to do conceptual sculpture, I made a scary, abandoned dollhouse, loved making the staircase, wanted to do a project on stairs, painted some stairs, haven’t stopped. Well, as part of the Artists Open House event during the Brighton Festival there is going to be an exhibition of selected work by Open House artists at the Regency House in Brunswick Square and the dollhouse, Untitled (house), has been chosen as one of the pieces. You can vote for the exhibit you like best and artists can win prizes. So, if you want to see what all the fuss is about, go along, enjoy the exhibition and vote (for me, preferably!).

Toovey's Contemporary Art Auction
Three pieces of my work will be going into Toovey’s Annual Contemporary Art Auction on 30th May. Dwelling (corner), The Pier at Southend No.2 and Ascension VI, Christmas Steps, Bristol, will be on sale to the highest bidder. It’s something a little bit different and to be frank, quite frightening. If you can, please come along and wave your arms around.

Art Fairs
It looks like I will be doing two art fairs this year. I’ve just heard that I have been accepted to the Brighton Art Fair and I have also booked a stand at the Windsor Contemporary Art Fair. They are both a while away (Oct and Nov) so I will let you know the details a bit nearer the time.

July 2008

I hope that everyone is having a lovely summer, avoiding the rain and enjoying the sunshine. I have managed to lose the blue-whiteness and have what I would call a ‘tan’, despite the fact that I spend nearly all my time indoors! Maybe it’s the glare from the canvas.
This newsletter is out a little early I’m afraid but there is such a lot going on at the moment….

Website
As you may or may not have noticed, my website has had a bit of a revamp. Most of the changes are technical, behind-the-scenes things that will be imperceptible to us ordinary folk but Orlando has been slaving away making sure that everything is looking lovely and running smoothly. (ThankYou)
Some things you will see, the section for Prints that I’ve been promising for a while has finally arrived, a section on commissioning paintings and there is even some new work to look out for.

Untitled Art Fair and Art for Youth
A quick ‘Thank You’, to everyone who came to the Untitled Art Fair in Chelsea. It was a really good event, even though it was hotter than the face of the Sun and jam-packed full of people. My apologies if you came to the Private View and had to queue, and also if I didn’t get the chance to speak to you. It was very hectic but good fun and I hope to be there again next year.
Also, the Art for Youth charity exhibition in Oxford went really well. It was a tremendous success, with over £35,000 worth of art being sold and more than £15,000 raised for Base 33 and UK Youth. Personally, I sold some work and had a wonderful few days exploring and being inspired by gorgeous Oxford.

Brighton Art Fair
The Brighton Art Fair is going to be coming up soon. It’ll be lovely to be back there, I still quite can’t believe a year has past since the last one! This year I will be on Stand 30, which is just to the right as you come through the door into the main hall. I am trying to get together a whole new body of work so that everything on the stand will be stuff that wasn’t there last year.

Royal Academy Summer Exhibition
Yes, you read that right! If you didn’t know already, I applied to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition for the first time this year with two paintings, one of which was accepted! “Detail IX, Caretaker, Brighton” is on the wall of the Small Weston Room, catalogue no. 359. It’s a very exciting turn of events and such a great honour to be in the same exhibition as some of my creative heroes.

May 2008

It’s 17°C today, Spring seems to have definitely sprung. In celebration of this I have enclosed many, many art-related invitations for the coming months. I hope that as well as decorating your fridge (and eventually recycling box) that you will be able to come along to some of the events.

The Chalk Gallery, Featured Artist Party
Thank you to everyone who made it to The Chalk Gallery Late Night Event last month. I hope everybody had a good time, it’s hard to tell when you’re flitting around organising stuff but everyone was smiling so I think it went well. There was an excellent turn out despite the weather and the cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off went down a storm, so they will definitely be on the buffet table next time!

Brighton Art Fair
I’m pleased to announce that my application to the Brighton Art Fair 2008 has been accepted. I’m very excited to be returning there as it’s the venue at which I first exhibited my paintings last year. The stand allocations have not been made yet but I will let you know where I will be in the venue so you don’t get lost in the crowds.

Giclee Prints
My excellent web designer, Orlando, has a lot on at the moment but I’m hoping that in the next few weeks I will have a new section on the website giving you all the information about the giclee prints that I promised in the last newsletter. I’ve had some very good feedback about the quality of the prints and they’ve already started selling, which I guess is the best kind of approval.

Belgravia Gallery
A quick report about something lovely that I didn’t have time to tell you about when it happened. The Belgravia Gallery on Abermarle Street in Central London showed my painting, “Assumption I, Lost in Hove” in their window as part of the Art and Architecture exhibition that they had in April. Hopefully, they will ask me to submit some more work and I will be able to let you know before the fact rather than after so you can go and take a look yourselves!

February 2008

Well, it looks like Spring is almost here. I hope everyone had a lovely, stress-free festive season, a warm and dry January and that you are looking forward to the year ahead. There are quite a few events coming up this year but in the meantime I have some exciting news!

The Chalk Gallery, Lewes
I’m very pleased to tell you that I have been invited to join the Chalk Gallery in Lewes. The Chalk Gallery is an artist led gallery situated in the historic town of Lewes. Twenty-one Sussex based artists work together to showcase painting, sculpture, prints and photography. The artists run, curate and take turns at receiving visitors. I will be officially starting my membership in Feb and will be the featured artist from 25th March – 13th April. For details about the Private View or if you would like to come along to the gallery while I am invigilating please see the Current and Upcoming Events section above for dates. There will be a re-hang of the gallery every six weeks so there will be new work to look at on a regular basis. Take a look at the website www.chalkgallery.org.uk for more information.

New work
It was great to get back to work after the festive-madness, which seemed to be endless this year and I’m pleased to say that I have started two new projects for you to take a look at.

As a bit of light relief, the “Specimen” series consists of small acrylic works on paper. I have collected lots of weird things and unusual images over the years and thought it would be fun to do some paintings of them. They are available unframed with a good mount at a very reasonable price.

I had been planning to start the “Vigil” series for quite a while and finally got round to it over the Winter. These acrylic on canvas paintings depict night-time views of brightly-lit and darkened windows. It is really interesting to paint such extreme lighting conditions, from the bleached out to the totally obscured. Something a bit different.

So, take a look at the new online galleries and let me know what you think. I really hope you like the new work as much as I do.

Giclee Prints
I finally decided on the specifications for the giclee prints and, fingers crossed, they will be available by May. I settled on three images “Ascension III”, “Brighton Bandstand” and “The Pier at Southend”. There will be a limited edition of 25 prints of each image. I will let you know exact sizes and prices once they arrive from the printer. Do email me if you would like to make a reservation.

November 2007

After a bit of post-fair recuperation and a short break in Oxford (collecting many lovely images of doors, stairs, etc), I’ve been back in the studio since the end of October and I’m glad to say that new works have been and are in production. New works which have been added to the website galleries have been highlighted with an orange dot.

Next year I will be having limited edition prints made of some of my paintings. At the moment I’m not sure which images I will have printed but if you are interested and would like to provisionally reserve a print of your favourite work, send me an email.

Well, I guess that’s all for now. Hopefully I will see some of you at the upcoming private views but if not, have a lovely Christmas and New Year and I will let you know in the spring of any new developments.

October 2007

The Brighton Art Fair was a great success. It was really lovely to meet everyone who came along and after months working in the studio it was good to be able to talk to people about the work that was on show. Everyone was very complimentary and I hope the people that bought work are already enjoying it. Works featured on this site which have been sold are now marked with a red dot by their title. Check the images to see which paintings are available.
There is also a chance that I will be exhibiting before the Untitled Art Fair in May. I will post any news as soon as the details are finalised.

September 2007

Welcome to my new website launched in September 2007. New work will continue to be posted in the galleries as it is completed.
